Net Metering in Solar Energy

Net metering, or Net Energy Metering (NEM), is a billing mechanism that allows consumers who generate their own electricity—typically through solar photovoltaic (PV) systems—to feed excess electricity back into the grid and receive credits on their utility bills. This system enables consumers to offset the cost of power drawn from the utility, effectively allowing them to use the grid as a virtual battery. When a solar system produces more electricity than is consumed, the surplus is exported to the grid, and the consumer earns credits. During periods when the system produces less than the consumption, such as at night or on cloudy days, electricity is drawn from the grid, and the previously earned credits are used to offset the cost.

In Bangladesh, the government has implemented net metering policies to promote the adoption of renewable energy. As of recent data, there are over 2,900 rooftop solar systems connected under the net metering scheme, with a combined capacity exceeding 121 MWp. The policy has been expanded to include single-phase and prepaid meter users, allowing 100% of excess solar power to be transmitted to the grid.

Net metering offers several benefits:

Financial Savings: Reduces electricity bills by crediting consumers for excess energy produced.
Energy Efficiency: Encourages the use of renewable energy sources, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Grid Stability: Distributed generation can alleviate stress on the grid during peak demand periods.

By enabling consumers to become prosumers—both producers and consumers of electricity—net metering plays a crucial role in the transition towards sustainable and decentralized energy systems.

SOLAR SYSTEM CLEANING

Manual Cleaning Tools: Soft-bristle brushes, squeegees, biodegradable soap, and hoses with water spray nozzles.

Process:

1. Turn off the solar system for safety.
2. Use deionized or soft water to prevent mineral deposits.
3. Gently scrub panels with a soft brush and mild soap.
4. Rinse thoroughly to remove all residues.
5. Dry with a squeegee or allow to air dry.

Clean during early morning or late evening to avoid thermal stress on panels.

Recommended Cleaning Schedule-

General Guideline: Clean panels at least once or twice a year.
High-Dust Areas: Quarterly cleaning is advisable.
Post-Weather Events: Inspect and clean after heavy storms, wildfires, or significant pollen seasons.
Monitoring: Regularly check system performance; a noticeable drop may indicate the need for cleaning.

Water Quality: Use deionized or soft water to prevent mineral buildup.
